School
History
One of the hardest tasks faced
by the faculty, staff, and student body of any new school is that
of establishing "tradition". This is something that
doesn't just happen by itself. Tradition can only be developed
through the passage of time, and the serendipity of notable events.
A school's tradition is a composite of winning athletic teams,
school clubs and organizations that have received special recognition,
and alumni coming back to look at the places and reminisce about
things from a time gone by. However, this difficult task has not
been a problem for one of E.P.I.S.D.'s newest schools, for like
the mythical Phoenix, Carlos Cordova Middle School has literally
risen from the ashes of the past.
Dedicated in 1956 as El Paso
Technical High School, the campus at 2231 Arizona proudly served
the thousands of students who walked its halls and sat in its
classrooms for more than two decades. The El Paso Tech Lions fielded
athletic teams respected by opponents, and school clubs and organizations
that were competitive statewide. Sadly, tradition was not destined
to die, only to lie in wait. On August 9, 1998, after an extensive
renovation of the old Tech campus, Carlos Cordova Middle School
was dedicated.
From the stately Lion statue
that graces the school's entryway to the polished marble floors
that seem to echo footsteps from a bygone era, the school literally
oozes tradition. The faculty and staff have masterfully managed
to transfer traditions established by the El Paso Tech Lions to
the Cordova Middle School Lions.
Cordova's fiercely competitive
football, basketball, volleyball, and track teams built on the
Lion tradition instantly, but it was the school's track teams
that linked past to present. In 1963, the El Paso Tech Lions won
the state championship in cross-country. During Cordova's first
year of operation, the Lions 7th and 8th grade track teams won
district and divisional championships. Since the first year, Cordova
Middle School students and teachers continue to meet the criteria
for excellence.
School clubs and organizations
have performed equally well. The Chess team has a state ranking,
the FBLA organization is a statewide competitor, the Speech UIL
team has won back-to-back first place trophies, and the UIL academic
teams are outstanding.
Yes indeed, the Lion does not
sleep tonight, but is on the prowl.
